About the Service

One Door Mental Health is establishing Distress Brief Support Short-Term Support Team (DBS STST) in Tamworth as a pilot program, designed as a trial short-term service to test and refine an early-intervention, recovery-oriented response to distress. The service is available to adults aged 18 years and over and aims to complement existing clinical and community services by providing timely, person-centered support during periods of heightened distress

 

About the role

We are seeking a collaborative and insightful Aboriginal Peer Practitioner for fixed term, fulltime (part time considered) opportunity located in Tamworth. You will act as a champion of co-design and lead co-production practices, in practical ways always placing the relationship and service user at the centre of their journey. This is done through working with a person to understand and identify their story, identify how they would like to move towards what is possible in their lives by focusing on relational care.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Utilising effective and appropriate sharing of learnings from personal recovery stories
  • Provide peer-based support to people living with mental health concerns by building trust through shared experiences, promoting a hopeful outlook, and offering consistent, empathetic engagement.
  • Deliver outreach-based peer support, including visiting clients in community settings and other services, to support engagement, reduce barriers to access, and assist clients to connect with appropriate supports.
  • Support the implementation of the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) to enhance outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Promote culturally safe services, build strong partnerships with the local Aboriginal Health Service, communities, and elders, and facilitate cultural events.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of current culturally safe practice within the service and/or interventions and engage in advocacy and systems change where required.

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) are required in Mental Health, Peer Work, Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) or other health related field as designated by ODMH.
  • Completion of Intentional Peer Support Core and/ or Advanced Training, is desirable but not required.
  • Has a lived/living experience of mental distress and recovery and understanding of, and ability and willingness to contribute this Lived Expertise in working towards greater organisational impact.
  • Experience or ability to acquire skills in understanding needs and working collaboratively to plan wellbeing supports using evidence informed approaches and tools, for example in challenging situations.
