About the service
The Youth Prevention and Recovery Care service (YPARC) is a residential service providing services to youth aged between 16 – 25 years. The service works within a lived experience, recovery focused and clinical treatment framework, using the partnership expertise of both Mind Australia and the Health Service. The service is designed as a ‘step up, step down’ program for young people with mental illness who require individualised treatment and support entering either directly from the community or as a transition from acute inpatient care.
About the role
We are seeking a knowledgeable and empowering Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) Worker for a Permanent, Part-Time position opportunity (24 hours per week) in the Shepparton area. You will work closely with Aboriginal health services, community organisations and kinship groups to provide opportunities for people to build or rebuild their connection to culture and develop connections with communities, elders and kin in a place of their choosing.
The Aboriginal SEWB Worker will provide cultural advice, advocacy and reflective practice support to strengthen culturally safe service delivery across the YPARC team, engage in advocacy, provide systems change where required, and build the capacity of the YPARC’s workforce to respond appropriately to First Nations peoples.
Key responsibilities
- Work with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander service users utilising a social and emotional wellbeing approach, recognising the importance of connection to country and mob and kinship care.
- Support all people who are service users of the YPARC using a recovery-oriented practice approach
- Assist service users to reconnect or connect with local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities and services recognising the health benefits of connection with country and community.
- Connect with and engage local service providers to promote the YPARC and create pathways for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people
- Engage and build relationships with local Aboriginal and /or Torres Strait Islanders elders, kinship groups, communities, community groups and organisations to ensure they are aware of the establishment of the YPARC on their country.
What you’ll bring
- Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) in Mental Health, AOD work, Peer Work, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy or other health related field as designated by Mind is highly desirable.
- Experience and expertise in working directly with Aboriginal and /or Torres Strait Islander people with mental health issues, homelessness, complex needs and with their families and carers
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the application of social and emotional wellbeing support, trauma informed practice, recovery-oriented practice, anti-oppressive practice and intersectionality.
- Demonstrated understanding of available community services, networks and supports.
- Experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples in connecting and reconnecting with country, communities, elders and kinship groups.
