About the role

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW) to join our new Cairns Medicare Mental Health Centre. In this role, you will provide person-centred, evidence-informed therapeutic care to people experiencing mental health and/or alcohol and other drug challenges, as well as their families, carers, and supporters.

You will deliver individual, group, and family interventions, conduct assessments, provide care coordination, and integrate clinical interventions with wellbeing supports, peer support, and mutual self-help initiatives. Working closely with a multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to a holistic, recovery-oriented service that empowers clients to achieve their goals.

About the service

The Cairns Medicare Mental Health Centre, delivered in partnership with Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service, provides a welcoming, low-stigma and safe space for people experiencing distress or crisis. Offering clinical and non-clinical support, the centre provides an alternative to hospital emergency departments and helps people access early intervention and ongoing supports, including AOD, housing, and social services.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality, individualised therapeutic services using evidence-informed approaches, tailored to client needs and delivered face-to-face, via telehealth, or online.
  • Conduct comprehensive psychosocial assessments and respond to DFV, AOD, and other complex risks.
  • Facilitate and evaluate therapeutic group programs, including co-production with clients and peer facilitators.
  • Provide support, education, advocacy, and referrals for families and carers.
  • Collaborate with local services, health providers, and clinical partners to ensure integrated care.
  • Assess and manage clinical risks, including suicide and complex mental health needs, and contribute to risk management planning.

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary qualifications in Social Work and AASW Mental Health Accreditation.
  • Significant experience providing focused psychological strategies and therapeutic support in mental health and AOD contexts.
  • Experience working with people with complex needs, including First Nations Peoples (desirable).
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming practice, cognitive behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing, harm reduction, and other therapeutic approaches.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and collaboratively, with strong organisational, communication, and advocacy skills.

Benefits

  • Generous not-for-profit salary packaging - up to $15,899 p.a. to reduce taxable income and cover living expenses.
  • Meal and Entertainment allowance – access up to an additional $2,650 p.a. through salary packaging.
  • Hybrid work options – opportunity to combine on-site and Telehealth work.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) - support for you and your immediate family.
  • Fitness Passport - access to a wide range of fitness facilities for you and your family.
  • Professional development - ongoing training and career growth opportunities.
