About the role

We are seeking a compassionate Psychologist to join our new Cairns Medicare Mental Health Centre. In this role, you will provide evidence-informed therapeutic support to people experiencing mental health and/or alcohol and other drug challenges, as well as their families, carers, and supporters.

You will conduct psychological assessments, deliver individual, group, and family interventions, and provide direct clinical care within a multidisciplinary team. You’ll work collaboratively with wellbeing, peer, and care coordination supports, ensuring all interventions are responsive to the needs and goals of each person accessing the service.

About the service

The Cairns Medicare Mental Health Centre, delivered in partnership with Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service, provides a welcoming, low-stigma and safe space for people experiencing distress or crisis. Offering clinical and non-clinical support, the centre provides an alternative to hospital emergency departments and helps people access early intervention and ongoing supports, including AOD, housing, and social services.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality therapeutic services, evidence-informed interventions, care plans, and capacity-building.
  • Deliver meaningful, individualised therapies tailored to clients’ needs, using face-to-face, telehealth, or online modalities.
  • Develop and facilitate therapeutic group programs, including co-production with clients and peer facilitators.
  • Offer clinical advice and consultation to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support integration of services with wellbeing, peer, and care coordination supports.
  • Maintain professional and ethical standards, including AHPRA registration and compliance with organisational policies.

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary degree in Psychology and eligibility for AHPRA registration.
  • Experience working directly with people with mental health and AOD challenges, complex needs, and their families, carers, and supporters.
  • Proven ability to deliver evidence-based therapeutic interventions and group programs.
  • Demonstrated experience applying trauma-informed theory and therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and harm reduction.
  • Understanding of lived experience approaches, including peer work, Intentional Peer Support, co-design, and workforce development.

Benefits

  • Generous not-for-profit salary packaging - up to $15,899 p.a. to reduce taxable income and cover living expenses.
  • Meal and Entertainment allowance – access up to an additional $2,650 p.a. through salary packaging.
  • Hybrid work options – opportunity to combine on-site and telehealth work.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) - support for you and your immediate family.
  • Fitness Passport - access to a wide range of fitness facilities for you and your family.
  • Professional development - ongoing training and career growth opportunities.
