About the service

The Forensic Transitional Recovery Program (FTRP) is a 12-month, community-based residential rehabilitation service in Cairns that supports people on forensic orders with severe and enduring mental health challenges to transition from acute clinical settings to independent living in the community. The program provides 24/7 support in a home-like environment, focusing on recovery goals, strengthening social connections, and increasing each person’s capacity for safe, independent living. Grounded in trauma-informed, recovery-oriented practice, FTRP empowers clients to build independence, reconnect with supports, and thrive in the community.

 

About the role

We are recruiting fixed-term, part-time Community Mental Health Practitioners to join our new Forensic Transitional Recovery program in Cairns. In this role, you will work collaboratively with clients, families, and carers to deliver personalised, recovery-oriented care. You will support clients to develop daily living skills, foster social inclusion, and rebuild confidence for independent living. This position requires flexibility to work a 24/7 rotating roster, including night shifts, weekdays, weekends, and sleepovers.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Purposefully engage with clients using techniques including: Brief intervention, Motivational interviewing and coaching, Family inclusive practice, Trauma informed practice, Conflict resolution.
  • Plan and develop group work programs that will assist clients to build their skills, focus on their recovery and work towards transitioning back to their natural community.
  • Support family and carer roles through understanding their concerns and the provision of information, education and referrals.
  • Collaborate with a range of services and the community to ensure a co-ordinated, integrated response to young people’s recovery goals.
  • Contribute to the day to day operations of the residential service through undertaking a range of housekeeping duties

 

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) in Youth Work, Mental Health, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, or other health-related field.
  • Proven experience in working with people with mental health issues, complex needs and interacting with families and carers.
  • Proven capability to implement therapeutic, recovery oriented frameworks and practices including risk mitigation, trauma informed care and family inclusive practice.
  • Hold a current First Aid and CPR certificate.
  • Ability to provide a record of Vaccination Preventable Diseases (or able to obtain vaccinations) against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Chicken Pox, Whooping Cough, Hepatitis B or other diseases as required by our Partnership with QLD Health.
