About the Service

Medicare Mental Health Centre (MMHC) Canterbury is an adult mental health centre offering a welcoming, low-stigma entry point for individuals experiencing distress or crisis. The centre delivers short- to medium-term episodes of care, connecting people to ongoing support through service navigation and collaborative care planning.

 

Our service is preparing to move into a larger, purpose‑built centre and will soon operate seven days a week. As we grow, we’re seeking team members who can offer flexibility, including weekend and afternoon shifts, to help us provide consistent, high‑quality care.

 

About the role

We are seeking a collaborative and insightful Aboriginal Peer Practitioner for fixed term, fulltime (part time considered) opportunity located in Canterbury. You will act as a champion of co-design and lead co-production practices, in practical ways always placing the relationship and service user at the centre of their journey. This is done through working with a person to understand and identify their story, identify how they would like to move towards what is possible in their lives by focusing on relational care.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Utilising effective and appropriate sharing of learnings from personal recovery stories
  • Provide peer-based support to people living with mental health concerns by building trust through shared experiences, promoting a hopeful outlook, and offering consistent, empathetic engagement.
  • Assist the person with system navigation and linkages to community agencies or support systems that will assist them to address life impacts and barriers to full social, educational and employment participation, as required.
  • Support the implementation of the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) to enhance outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Promote culturally safe services, build strong partnerships with the local Aboriginal Health Service, communities, and elders, and facilitate cultural events.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of current culturally safe practice within the service and/or interventions and engage in advocacy and systems change where required.

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) are required in Mental Health, Peer Work, Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) or other health related field as designated by ODMH.
  • Completion of Intentional Peer Support Core and/ or Advanced Training, is desirable but not required.
  • Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and ideally, have active involvement in Aboriginal communities across the Central and Eastern Sydney region and surrounding communities.
  • Has a lived/living experience of mental distress and recovery and understanding of, and ability and willingness to contribute this Lived Expertise in working towards greater organisational impact.
  • Experience or ability to acquire skills in understanding needs and working collaboratively to plan wellbeing supports using evidence informed approaches and tools, for example in challenging situations.
