About the role

headspace in partnership with Mind aims to promote and facilitate improvements in the mental health, social wellbeing and economic participation of young people aged 12-25 years residing in the Eastern Region of Melbourne. Services in this youth friendly space are delivered across four core streams - physical and sexual health, mental health, alcohol and other drugs (AOD), and educational and vocational services to improve access for young people to mental health programs as well as ensuring better co-ordination between service providers.

We are seeking motivated and energetic Community Engagement Practitioner for a Permanent, Part Time role (22.8 hours a week) in the Box Hill area. In this position you will support the promotion the services provided the headspace centre and help young people to get early access to health and other services.

The Community Engagement Practitioner will support enhance mental health literacy among youth, friends, families and communities. The position will help plan develop and deliver group programs for young individuals across headspace Box Hill and will also play a key part in health promotion activities focusing on mental well-being and social interaction.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Assist with the development, implementation and evaluation of a Community Awareness Strategy which includes a Community Awareness Plan and Youth Participation plan for the local centre in conjunction with the centre management team.
  • Work with Service Manager, Clinical Lead, and Peer Practitioners in the development of stakeholder engagement plan.
  • Engage with young people and their families and friends to understand their need for assistance from local service providers.
  • Support in the planning, development and delivery of community-based help seeking and mental health literacy education sessions.
  • Assist in the planning and development of group work programs.
  • Experience utilising social media and presentations to develop opportunities for youth engagement, family and friend’s engagement and service promotion.

 

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) in Mental Health, Peer Work, Community Development, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy or other health related field as designated by Mind.
  • Understanding of the community services sector and ability to build strong relationships.
  • Demonstrated skills in working with young people and or adults and families with mental health and/or contextual challenges including family violence, poverty, homelessness, drug and alcohol, protective issues and with their family and community.
  • Strong organisation and planning skills to assist with the delivery of relevant community events with schools and community groups as well as headspace training.
  • Highly developed interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Previous engagement with Your Reference Groups (preferred).
