About the Service

The NSW Family and Carers Mental Health Program (FCMHP) operates across NSW where staff from both Local Health Districts and selected Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) work side by side in a collaborative approach to provide a comprehensive range of support services and training and education to families and carers of people with a mental illness. ODMH operates at local level as self-organised teams – called Recovery 2gether teams. As a team member, the Peer Carer Advocate will work collaboratively with other team members to facilitate the effective operation of the team.

 

About the role

We are seeking an empathetic and collaborative Carer Advocate for a fixed term, part time (27.5 hours per week) opportunity until 30th June 2026 within the Family and Carers Mental Health Carer Program based in Wagga Wagga. The role involves development of and delivery of purposeful programs for carers that include: information, advocacy, individual and group supports including wellbeing activities, socialisation and education. You will ensure that families and carers of people with mental ill health, have access to appropriate information and flexible options for support at all points within their caring journey at the time they need it.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Provide the client with education and strategies for the development of decision-making, self-advocacy, self-management and wellness skills using personal lived experience.
  • Build one to one supportive relationships and client groups, based on the One Door Lived Experience Framework and Peer Support Values that focus on the use of lived experience to support the people we work with in regards to the individuals’ needs and recovery.
  • Undertake or review risk assessments to ensure supports are delivered safely and, in the manner agreed with people we support.
  • Maintain an engaging and effective working partnership with our Local Health District partners, including representation at stakeholder meetings.

What you’ll bring

  • Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work OR Certificate IV in a relevant discipline (e.g. mental health, peer work, disability) or equivalent experience AND willingness to obtain a Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work within the first 12 months of employment.
  • Lived experience of mental health challenges, personal recovery, and service use and a willingness to use experience to role model recovery to support others.
  • Willingness to purposefully share their personal experience to support the team and others to contribute to change; which will include promotion of the lived experience workforce in communities
  • Communicate effectively in all interactions with all stakeholders
  • Experience in working with families and carers and/or people with a mental illness
