About the service

The Youth Prevention and Recovery Care service (YPARC) is a residential service providing services to youth aged between 16 – 25 years. The service works within a lived experience, recovery focused and clinical treatment framework, using the partnership expertise of both Mind Australia and the Health Service. The service is designed as a ‘step up, step down’ program for young people with mental illness who require individualised treatment and support entering either directly from the community or as a transition from acute inpatient care.

About the role

We are seeking a self-motivated LGBTIQA+ Youth Peer Practitioner for a Permanent, Part Time (working 15 hours per week) opportunity in the Shepparton region. This role will see you utilising your lived and living mental health challenges and/or alcohol and drug challenges to engage directly with clients through providing empathetic and positive support. Will champion the voice of lived experience, advocate for human rights and provide an alternative to traditional mental health responses through the practice of mutuality.

Key responsibilities

  • Draw on the broader Lived Experience knowledge base as a member of the LGBTIQA+ community to inform your practice.
  • Understand a person in a holistic way including where their experiences intersect with alcohol and drug, domestic violence, trauma, self-injury and suicide, culture etc.
  • Work closely with the Relationships and Family Engagement worker to support family and carer roles through understanding their concerns and the provision of information, education and referrals.
  • Assist service users with system navigation and linkages to community agencies or support systems that will assist them to address life impacts and barriers to full social, educational and employment participation, as required.
  • Be grounded in the discipline of Lived Expertise, drawing from your own lived experience, informed by a commitment to social change, human rights, dignity and choice to shape the delivery of their work and that of Mind.

What you’ll bring

  • Completion of Intentional Peer Support Core and/ or Advanced Training, or Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work desirable but not required.
  • Lived/living experience and willingness to support clients through sharing your own learnings and recovery orientated practice.
  • Identify as LGBTIQA+ young person, and willing to share learnings from your personal story in an appropriate and purposeful manner to support, empower, speak about the times of hopelessness and the importance of hope, and support the recovery of people.
  • Experience, expertise and/or desire in working directly with LGBTIQA+ young people with mental health issues, and their families and carers.
  • Spearhead co-design and coproduction in all aspects of the service including program evaluation, planning, decision making and service design.
  • Able to obtain and provide evidence of vaccinations against COVID-19.
  • Able to obtain CPR and First Aid certifications.
