About the Service
Help aHead aims to improve access to mental health support for the community by delivering services that address people’s social, physical and emotional needs. It will provide access to psychological and psychosocial support, care coordination, and local service navigation, with the capacity to scale and meet a wide range of mental health needs, including those with co-occurring conditions or complex psychosocial barriers.
About the role
We are seeking an empowering and insightful Peer Practitioner for a permanent, part time (30.4 hours per week) opportunity in the Sydney area. You will utilise the learning from lived/living experience of mental health challenges and/or alcohol and drug challenges to walk alongside service users providing an alternative to traditional mental health responses
Key responsibilities
- Provide peer-based support to people living with mental health concerns by building trust through shared experiences, holding hope, and offering consistent, empathetic engagement
- Work within a multidisciplinary team at Help aHead to deliver effective services.
- Supporting the facilitation of groups, including setup and pack-up, contributing from a lived experience lens, and providing guidance and support to individual attendees
- Assist clients to navigate community agencies and supports that will assist them in addressing barriers to full social, educational and employment participation, as required.
- Be grounded in the discipline of Lived Expertise, drawing from your own lived experience.

What you’ll bring
- Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) are required in Mental Health, Peer Work, Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) or other health related field as designated by ODMH.
- Completion of Intentional Peer Support Core and/ or Advanced Training, is desirable but not required as training will be provided.
- Has a lived/living experience of mental distress and recovery and understanding of, and ability and willingness to, contribute this Lived Expertise in working towards greater organisational impact.
- Ability to share learnings from your personal story in an appropriate and purposeful manner to support, empower, speak about the times of hopelessness and the importance of hope, and support the recovery of clients.
