About the role

We are seeking self-motivated, empathic Peer Practitioners for casual opportunities at the Transitional Care Unit (TCU) in St James. Drawing on your lived or living experience of mental health and/or alcohol and other drug challenges, you will walk alongside service users, supporting them to explore their strengths, identify goals, and take meaningful steps toward recovery and independent living.

As a Peer Practitioner, you will champion lived experience, using your recovery journey in a safe and purposeful way to support others. You will promote human rights and offer an alternative to traditional mental health responses through mutuality, empathy, and shared understanding, while holding space for distress and building hope through strong relational practice.

About the service

The Saint James Transitional Care Unit (TCU), in partnership with East Metro Health Service, supports adults aged 18–64 to transition from hospital to community or prevent hospital admissions. Delivered by a multidisciplinary team of mental health clinicians and peer workers, the service helps clients achieve their goals, build life skills, strengthen relationships, connect with support networks, and develop the confidence and capacity to live independently.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide individual peer support grounded in your lived/living experience, including safe and purposeful sharing to build hope and support recovery.
  • Utilise the Intentional Peer Support (IPS) framework to walk alongside individuals in distress.
  • Design and facilitate group programs that support peer connection and wellbeing.
  • Support people to navigate systems and connect with services, education, employment and community supports.
  • Work in a family-inclusive way, strengthening connections with carers and natural supports
  • Contribute to co-design and co-production, service improvement, and ongoing professional development including peer co-reflection.

 What you’ll bring

  • Lived or living experience of mental health and/or AOD challenges, with a willingness to share your learnings to support others.
  • Certificate IV or higher in Mental Health, Peer Work, Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) or other health-related field.
  • Completion of Intentional Peer Support (IPS) Core and/or Advanced Training, or Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work (highly desirable).
  • Current First Aid and CPR certificates.
  • Experience, interest, or passion for supporting people experiencing mental health and/or AOD challenges, and their families or carers.
  • A strong commitment to person-centred, trauma-informed and recovery-oriented practice.
  • Availability to work a rotating roster including evenings and weekends.

 Benefits

  • Generous not-for-profit salary packaging - up to $15,899 p.a. to reduce taxable income and cover living expenses.
  • Workplace Banking Portal - access to a variety of banking and lifestyle benefits through our CommBank program.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) - support for you and your immediate family.
