About the role

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Social Worker or Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW) to join our new Cairns Medicare Mental Health Centre.

In this role, you will deliver person-centred, recovery-oriented therapeutic services to people experiencing mental health and/or alcohol and other drug challenges, as well as their families, carers and supporters. You will provide comprehensive assessment, brief interventions, treatment planning and evaluation, delivering both short- and medium-term clinical support.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will integrate clinical interventions with wellbeing supports, peer support, care coordination and mutual self-help approaches to support holistic recovery outcomes.

About the service

The Cairns Medicare Mental Health Centre, delivered in partnership with Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service, provides a welcoming, low-stigma and safe space for people experiencing distress or crisis. Offering clinical and non-clinical support, the centre provides an alternative to hospital emergency departments and helps people access early intervention and ongoing supports, including AOD, housing, and social services.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality, evidence-informed therapeutic interventions tailored to individual needs.
  • Conduct comprehensive psychosocial and risk assessments, including suicide and complex needs.
  • Develop and implement person-led support and treatment plans using recovery-oriented practice.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members and external stakeholders to ensure integrated care.
  • Build and maintain strong referral pathways and community partnerships.
  • Maintain high standards of professional practice, documentation and clinical governance.

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary qualifications in Social Work and current AASW membership.
  • AASW Mental Health Accreditation or willingness to work towards accreditation.
  • Significant experience providing focused psychological strategies and therapeutic support in mental health and AOD contexts.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting people with complex needs using recovery-oriented approaches.
  • Knowledge of evidence-informed therapeutic modalities (e.g. CBT, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed practice).
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and collaboratively, with strong organisational, communication, and advocacy skills.

Benefits

  • Generous not-for-profit salary packaging - up to $15,899 p.a. to reduce taxable income and cover living expenses.
  • Workplace Banking Portal - access to a variety of banking and lifestyle benefits through our CommBank program.
  • Hybrid work options – opportunity to combine on-site and telehealth work.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) - support for you and your immediate family.
  • Fitness Passport - access to a wide range of fitness facilities for you and your family.
  • Professional development - ongoing training and career growth opportunities.
